A delicate issue that requires delicate handling

The business community welcomes the more cautious approach the Australian Law Reform Commission has taken in its final report on family violence, according to a statement by ACCI's Chief Executive, Peter Anderson.

Recognising the importance of this issue to the community, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry lodged detailed submissions to the ALRC, and also met senior officers and the President, during the inquiry.

ACCI is pleased that the commission has considered the views of the business community.

We are particularly pleased that the final report has moderated an earlier proposal that would have seen employers fund a new entitlement for ten days leave for employees who experience domestic violence.

The final report suggests a more cautious and phased-in approach, with a greater emphasis on education and awareness.

This approach will assist employees in the community rather than create a new tier of employment rights and legal obligations on employers.

Domestic violence is a dclicate issue that requires delicate handling by government.

We need to tackle this issue as a community, not simply by putting new laws in the statute books.
