Business advocacy in Victoria enters a new era with the State's Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce - Kinaway - opening for business.
Aboriginal businesses owners and entrepreneurs will now have a dedicated Chamber of Commerce providing them with policy advice, representation and business services. Kinaway has the support of VECCI, giving the Chamber access to the resources of the State's largest and most influential business advocacy organisation. Kinaway's Board was established in March with 100 per cent Aboriginal representation. The Board's interim Chairperson Ms Karen Milward says these events are a big step forward for Victoria's Aboriginal business community. "The concept for Kinaway was first raised in 2006 and it is great to see the culmination of this today with the establishment of Victoria's Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce," says Ms Milward. "Aboriginal businesses owners and entrepreneurs will now be able to access VECCI's full range of services as well as dedicated services designed to address specific needs of Aboriginal businesses. "When you think Aboriginal business, most people think arts and crafts, however support for Aboriginal business people is making a big difference in their communities." VECCI CEO Wayne Kayler-Thomson says the establishment of Kinaway will not only see the advancement of Aboriginal businesses but also the wider Victorian business community. "Kinaway will be run by the Aboriginal business community for the Aboriginal business community, with VECCI providing support in the Chamber's initial stages," says Mr Kayler-Thomson. "In order for Victoria to continue to prosper, a vibrant business community is vital, and part of this is making sure the State's Aboriginal business community thrives. "The response to Kinaway has been fantastic with help from the State Government as well as support shown from international chambers of commerce dedicated to the advancement of indigenous businesses," says Mr Kayler-Thomson.
