Unfortunately, many of the people who are in that 98% don't realize that they're in the 98%. We have all experienced those. Some of us have been those people. Paradoxically, everyone possesses a sense of humour, so it's a matter of tapping into an individual's personality and having them project it so that it's natural, credible and endearing. Therefore I recommend the use of the anecdote. (b) You'll tell the story with greater conviction than with a joke because we mostly tell jokes as we think we heard them being told. The person who told us told it as they think they heard it, and so on. A story is often diluted and distorted as it travels down the line, but if you are verbally reliving an incident from first- hand experience it will be far more vivid. (c) The other reason for staying with the anecdote is that unless you've addressed that audience before, they will not have heard the story, and the previous speaker will not have told it (hopefully). |
